Positive Beginnings offers Psychiatry, therapy services, and progressive treatments for depression. I currently see Nurse Practitioner Colleen Karasinski for medication to manage anxiety and depression and Dr. Jamal Mahmud for TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation). I've been seeing Colleen while suffering from a deep depression. I really didn't care if I lived or died. She had been trying different medications while also suggesting that I try TMS(Google it!). I wasn't having it. I just didn't want to do any more work than I was already doing just trying to live. But, then I spoke with Dr.Mahmud and since both Colleen and he thought it would really benefit me I figured I'd go along with it. I honestly didn't really believe anything would help. It's a simple procedure, they put a cap on your head, then a magnetic coil device, and you sit for 20 minutes with intermittent tapping on your head daily for 6 weeks.You can watch TV or listen to music while the treatment is happening. After a week of treatment, I dragged my husband outside to do some much-needed yard work for 3 days in a row. He finally said to me, "Do you notice anything different?" I said, "what do you mean?" He said, "You're outside doing yard work!!" And then it hit me, I had energy! I wasn't sitting in bed in the dark. I was out in the sunlight, shaping our bushes. I'm still astonished! I just finished week 3 and what I can say is this TMS treatment is changing my life. I feel better than I have in a long time. I'm happy and I have more energy, and best of all I feel hopeful. I'm looking forward to feeling even better in 3 more weeks! Thank you to Colleen, Dr.Mahmud, and Leiddy, you are all a great team. I'm thankful I found you. I have been a patient of Dr. Mahmud for 10 years. He is an extremely good listener and never rushes through an appointment. His greatest quality in my opinion is his empathy. When speaking to him I know that he genuinely cares about my well being and is never judgmental. I’m never kept waiting for my appointment.. he is very respectful of my time. His office manager Kathleen is also extremely professional and goes above and beyond to make sure she accommodates Dr. Mahmud’s patients. She returns my phone calls promptly and always addresses things such as insurance issues and appointment change requests.

My mother was referred here after her therapist of 25 years retired. I was very nervous because she was so close with her previous doctor. But the Doctor and therapist down to the front desk manager are nothing short of phenomenal. Dr Mahmud is kind and highly professional. When she started to become depressed he recommended TMS and I have seen such a change in her so much already. If you are looking for somewhere for your loved one, or yourself I highly recommend Positive Beginnings. If they took my insurance I would be a client no doubt about it!!

I have been a patient of Dr. Mahmud's for many years now. He is one of those doctors who is very professional and very patient and caring with his clients. He listens intently and never rushes through our appointments. He always makes sure that before I leave an appointment with him I have no further questions or concerns. He takes the time to truly get to know you. He is a great listener and he explains things very well so that you can understand them. Before Positive Beginnings and my work with the doctors and staff I was battling severe depression, PTSD and anxiety. It was nearly impossible to get out of bed and function. I felt lost, but with the help of Dr. Mahmud for psychiatry and Marijayne for therapy, I have made huge strides since 2020. Along with TMS, I have become much more functional, happy, and even did a trip on my own to San Diego for Thanksgiving - something I would've talked myself out of before. There is no such thing as the perfect day, but Positive Beginnings has enabled me to aim for them, dance around, and escape my shell. Also shout out to the assisting staff who are friendly, helpful, and polite. They help make the TMS treatment enjoyable
